We all know that taking time off and going on vacation makes us feel good. There are proven physiological and psychological effects of resting and recharging away from your regular routine and responsibilities. What are some ways that vacations benefit us?
Social interaction: A range of studies have highlighted how holidays help to create new social interactions, increase satisfaction with social contacts, increase connection, and lower loneliness.
Stress reduction: Taking a break creates a positive impact on stress reduction and the boosting the immune system which lasts for at least a month.
Cognitive functioning: Going on vacation provides opportunities for social communication, gaining knowledge, learning skills, appreciation of history and culture, and experiencing of different attitudes.
Anxiety and overthinking: It has been found that when individuals travelled far from home, their rumination thinking reduced and their sense of wellbeing increased. They slept more, and engaged in greater physical and social activities.
Quality of life: Studies identified the relationship between holidays increasing satisfaction with life, self-perceived health and capacity to engage in day to day tasks.
Increasing positive emotions: A link has been found between the number and variety of activities engaged in on vacation and benefits including relaxation and enjoyment.
